What Genuinely Improved

Three changes are real and consistent across the team's experience:

Multi-step reasoning is sharper. Tasks that require holding several constraints in mind simultaneously — refactors that touch interface, tests, and call sites in coordinated ways — produce more coherent diffs than 5 did. The model is doing more genuine planning before execution.

Edge case handling improved. GPT-5.5 catches more of the "what about when X is null" and "what about the legacy path" cases without being prompted. Not all of them. But more of them. That is a quality improvement that compounds.

Code review responses got more specific. When the model is asked to critique a diff, it produces feedback that is usable in 2026 in a way 5's feedback often was not. Less "consider adding error handling" and more "the catch block at line 47 swallows the rate-limit error, which will mask the production bug pattern from yesterday's incident."

What Stayed the Same

Two things did not change much:

Plausible-but-wrong code is still a thing. GPT-5.5 still writes diffs that compile, pass obvious tests, and break invariants. The rate is lower than 5, but it is not zero. Diff discipline is still the merge gate.

Spec sensitivity is unchanged. A bad spec still produces a bad diff. The model does not save you from loose intent. The leverage from spec investment is the same as it was at 5.

The honest answer: it depends on the task and the team.

GPT-5.5 strengths over Opus 4.7: Sharper edge case handling. Slightly faster on shorter tasks. More aggressive defaults — produces more output without prompting, which can be a feature or a noise problem depending on the work.

Opus 4.7 strengths over GPT-5.5: Longer-task coherence holds further. Larger context window. Slightly better at staying within negative spec criteria.

Workflow Changes Worth Making

Three changes when integrating GPT-5.5 into a vibe coding workflow:

Update your CLAUDE.md (or model-equivalent) to be model-portable. If your project context is full of "Claude prefers X" preamble, it will produce worse outputs at GPT-5.5. Write context that is about your project, not about a model.

Re-run your spec templates against the new model. Specs that were tuned for GPT-5's quirks may have unnecessary verbosity that GPT-5.5 does not need. Tighten them.

Recalibrate review effort on edge cases. GPT-5.5 catches more edge cases on its own. That is good. But it can lull reviewers into reviewing less carefully. The model is not perfect. Read the diff.

What This Means for Tool-Agnostic Teams

The story under this is not "GPT-5.5 vs Claude." The story is "the model layer is moving fast, and teams locked to one vendor will keep paying for it."
